I read a write-up by Henry James on George Sand that aroused my curiosity. He praised the authoress quite extensively, and especially singled out this book. My library has a lot of George Sand but not this book, so I bought it. My star rating should really be allowed a split personality: 5 stars for the descriptions of countryside and then the 3 stars for drama. (If melodrama it could well go to 5 stars, though.) I think Mme. Sand's own rating of her novel writing is accurate, "I write for money," and I think by the last third of the book this shows. The first third concerns the countryside, the ladies of the house (grandmother, mother, and daughter, with servants). Then neighbors are added and we have attempts to characterize. I leave it to professional critics to suggest how Mme. Sand could improve her books. I have tried to figure something out for her - with no luck whatsoever. For me, by far her best writing is about music and I am sorry she did not give more place to that in her work. To compare her writing about music with that of the critics of her day I have found a sort of marvelous illumination.Product details

It starts off well with interesting characters and the appearance of a plot. Then it turns into crap a suicide attempt and threats of more attempts by our "hero" whose true love has married someone else. I'm actually making it sound more plausible than Sand does! From there, the plot gets worse. The tension is all about whether or not Valentine and her suicidal boyfriend will commit adultery and thereby save both his life and his exploding testicles! The ending was horrible but I was happy that it was finished anyway. I believe in judging an author by her best work. Don't judge Sand by this book because it is one of her worst. My favorite of her works so far in my reading of her, is Leone Leoni. She is best known for Indiana and Consuelo.
