Murder Among Friends ... OR ... Fun With Dick And Jane

I have to give the author credit for finishing a book of this size. No easy feat. Having said that ... writer to writer ... in my opinion it would be just as good with half the content.

Depending on Steve Demaree’s targeted audience ... if it's for grade school readers, then that's why it didn't appeal to me. While I think it’s a cute little cozy mystery that has potential for an older crowd, it is in dire need of a content, grammar, common sense edits. There are many blatant inconsistencies that need to be corrected. For example, at 59 percent there's a truck uphill/downhill situation that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. And at 65 percent, in Knoxville and Chattanooga, two people didn't die ... one died, one survived ... and this mistake was mentioned previously. There are also way too many repetitions that are jarring to this reader. There is no need for the in-depth and repeated explanations for the mature reader who doesn't need to have everything spelled out in minute detail.

I was tempted to quit reading many times but kept hoping the author would redeem himself. But, alas! It just didn't happen.

Murder Among Friends Book 2 Off the Beaten Path Mystery Series edition by Steve Demaree Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I am a big fan of the author's writings, especially the Dekker Cozy Mystery Series. It surprises me that more people don't read this series. As a 'clean' indie author, readers don't have to worry about profanity, gratuitous sex or extreme gore and violence. Hallelujah. What they will get is a well thought out mystery with some twists and turns along the way. That being said, this particular story is not quite up to par with the other three in the "Off The Beaten Path" series. My main problem was too much explanation surrounding the protagonist. The fact that she was the motivation for the murders taking place would have been more enjoyable without the excessive exploring of her childhood dreams and feelings. Aside from that, the author delivers a good solid mystery that will surprise you at the end.
Great plot line! Would have been a great audio book! I do have a couple of issues with the book however.

First of all, it was written in the third person and I'm not a real fan of third person books unless they are audio or are really smoothly written. This book was just a tad rough to be written in the third person. It was like he was thinking and writing at the same time and it didn't flow smoothly. I felt there was a constant struggle to keep the book in third person format throughout when the author really wanted to be "living" the story in first person. I'm hoping this was the first book he ever wrote because I have read many by this author and loved every single one of the them. I would hate to think he is losing his touch so I shall remain in denial!

My other complaint is a flaw in the plot. SPOILER ALERT!!!! STOP READING NOW IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW!!!!

When the first murder took place in Lexington, the cops came to the conclusion it would have had to have been a strong, fairly large person to hold her out the window and thrust the body to the ground in the manner in which she was killed. But YET, in the end, the murder claimed she had no help (other than a lesson in cutting brake lines and rigging a bomb) and this murderer was female. Even though we weren't given specific height/weight statistics on her, we were led to believe she wasn't all that big as she was a wanna be cheerleader who wasn't good enough or coordinated enough to make the squad (as per conversation by the protagonist). So my question is, how did she pull of this murder in Lexington without help? Were the cops wrong in their assumption of height/strength needed or did she really have help or was the reason she didn't make the cheer-leading squad because she was in reality an ? Inquiring minds really want to know!

Other than that, I enjoyed the plot! And I really do love Steve Demaree's work. Sorry guy, you lost a star on this one. (
The plot is full of holes. The first thing that jumped out at me was the killer was using the victims' ATM cards to make withdrawals. How did the murderer get the pin? Don't all ATM's have cameras? Certainly every one I've seen has cameras, yet the author brushes this off by having one of the characters ask about a camera and is answered with "this one didn't." Oh yeah? BS! If the murderer went to at least three ATM's, at least one of them had to have a camera, statistically speaking. Then there are other problems with the plot one of the victims was thrown out a window, so the main investigator figures it had to be a man as the perp, yet they can't place him at the scene of the crime. This gets glossed over at the end. Then there is the unexplained appearance of some guy at the clothing shop that gets all the potential victims riled, but he's never identified. Finally, let's get serious, all of these murders were committed because some hillbilly girls didn't make it to the cheerleading team? The conclusion was just too much too take.

Another issue I had was that there were just too many victims and characters to keep track of. I found myself backing up pages at a time, just trying to figure out who the heck had been killed and what that person's relationship to the rest was. Cheese-us, it's a short novel, this isn't "Crime and Punishment." It shouldn't require a cast list in the preface to help us keep track of the characters.

Then there was the issues with the prose. For example, when one of the protagonists, Jennifer, is exploring her parents' old drive-in theater, the narrative delves into so much detail that I found myself skimming several pages in a row, just to get past all that boring twaddle. Then, when there's something interesting going on, the author seems to jump into Reader's Digest mode and not go into enough detail.

Overall, I'll say it's an OK read, especially since the version was free. Plus we used to live in the Knoxville TN area, so I could appreciate some of the local references.
